What Bioderma Says

Product Description:

Bioderma creates Photoderm SPOT-AGE SPF 50+ that combines the power of three active ingredients recognised by dermatologists (vitamin C, vitamin E and centella asiatica) and solar filters for broad spectrum protection (UV, visible light, infrared) and creates sun care that prevents and promotes the reduction of visible signs of photoaging (spots, wrinkles, loss of firmness). Cellular Bioprotection patent, real internal biological protection, preserves and stimulates the skin's natural defences against the sun's harmful effects. Vitamin E and vitamin C selected in Photoderm SPOT-AGE SPF 50+ are highly stable. They provide complementary antioxidant protection against the effects of the broad spectrum (free radicals). They also help to prevent the appearance of new spots. The vitamin C added to the product is three times more stable than the biological active form of vitamin C called L-ascorbic acid. Vitamin E is introduced under its most natural and active form. It blocks radical reactions allowing to limit photo-ageing effects on the skin. Centella asiatica prevents damage to the dermis and regenerates the skin. Benefits: Offers a very high UVA/UVB protection, Prevents and helps reduce the visible signs of photoaging (marks, wrinkles and loss of firmness), Moisturises the skin lastingly, Prevents dermal alterations and regenerates the skin, Light, dry touch gel-cream texture, Excellent make-up base, Very good skin and eye tolerance, Non-comedogenic, Water resistant, Resistant to high heat and humidity, SPF retention 8 hours, Post-superficial laser. Proven efficacy: Skin photoaging or heloderma results in hyperpigmented spots also called lentigos, wrinkles and loss of skin elasticity. Results proven by clinical studies. Lasting Results: Helps reduce the visible signs of photoaging, Decreased average wrinkle depth after 28 days of use at 15%, Reduce the appearance of new spots: 97%, Visibly corrects the signs of photoaging: 79%.

Aqua/water/eau

Common Name(s): Aqua/water/eau extract

DESCRIPTION

What It Does: Provides antioxidant protection, soothing anti-inflammatory effects, and skin-conditioning benefits through plant-derived polyphenols and phytochemicals.

Why It's Used: Plant extracts concentrate bioactive phytochemicals evolved for environmental protection โ€” uv, microbial, and oxidative stressors โ€” that translate to skin benefits.

How It Works: Polyphenols (flavonoids, phenolic acids) inhibit nf-ฮบb-mediated inflammatory signaling, scavenge reactive oxygen species through electron donation, and chelate pro-oxidant metal ions to reduce oxidative skin damage.

Typically Found In: Serums,toners,moisturizers,masks,essences

TECHNICAL DETAILS

Primary Category: Botanical extracts

Secondary Functions: Antioxidant,anti-inflammatory

Application Areas:

Facial Skincare

Body Care

SKIN COMPATIBILITY

Irritancy Rating: 1

Comedogenicity Rating: 0

Sensitivity Concerns: Low sensitization potential at recommended use concentrations.

Safe for Sensitive Skin: Yes

SAFETY & COMPATIBILITY

Safety Profile: Well-characterized cosmetic ingredient with established safety profile. generally non-irritating at typical use concentrations. suitable for leave-on and rinse-off cosmetics.

Works Well With: Niacinamide,hyaluronic acid,vitamin c,ceramides

Avoid Combining With: Strong oxidizing agents

SCIENTIFIC NOTE

Plant secondary metabolites (flavonoids, terpenes, phenolic acids) are biosynthesized as defense compounds against uv, herbivores, and pathogens. their anti-inflammatory activity typically derives from competitive inhibition of cox-2 and 5-lox enzymes (ic50 1โ€“50 ยตm), while antioxidant activity involves single electron transfer (set) and hydrogen atom transfer (hat) mechanisms with structure-dependent rate constants.

Asiaticoside

Common Name(s): Centella asiatica glycoside,asiaticoside b

CAS Number: 16830-15-2

DESCRIPTION

What It Does: Accelerates wound healing and reduces scar formation through fibroblast activation and collagen synthesis stimulation.

Why It's Used: Clinically proven scar reduction and wound healing active โ€“ the compound behind centella's legendary wound healing reputation.

How It Works: Promotes fibroblast proliferation and collagen synthesis via tgf-ฮฒ independent mechanism (distinct from madecassoside). also inhibits hyaluronidase protecting extracellular matrix. antimicrobial activity supports wound healing environment.

Typically Found In: Post-surgical products, scar treatments, wound healing formulations

Irritancy Rating: 1/5 โ€“ very low

Comedogenicity Rating: 0/5 โ€“ non-comedogenic

Sensitivity Concerns: Non-irritating; ideal for reactive and sensitive skin.

Safe for Sensitive Skin: Yes โ€“ particularly recommended for sensitive skin

SAFETY & COMPATIBILITY

Safety Profile: Excellent safety profile. ewg score: 1.

Works Well With: Ceramides, panthenol, allantoin, hyaluronic acid, centella asiatica

Avoid Combining With: No significant incompatibilities

SCIENTIFIC NOTE

Asiaticoside's mechanism of wound healing involves release of aglycone asiatic acid after hydrolysis by skin beta-glucosidases. the glycoside form provides better stratum corneum penetration than the hydrophobic aglycone, acting as a prodrug for the active asiatic acid at the wound healing site.

Why It's Used: Widely used natural surfactant for green beauty formulations requiring good foam performance with natural-origin and mild credentials.

How It Works: Mixed c8-c16 fatty alcohol chain lengths from coconut provide broader foam stability than single-chain glucosides. non-ionic glucoside headgroup provides mildness. better detergency and rinsing than individual chain-length apgs due to mixed chain distribution.

Typically Found In: Natural shampoos, body washes, facial cleansers

TECHNICAL DETAILS

Primary Category: Functional ingredient โ€“ coconut alkyl glucoside

Secondary Functions: Skin conditioning

Application Areas:

Facial Skincare

Body Care

Hair Care

Beard Care

Color Cosmetics (Makeup)

SAFETY & COMPATIBILITY

Safety Profile: Good safety profile at recommended concentrations. ewg score: 1โ€“2.

Works Well With: Standard skincare actives

Avoid Combining With: No known significant incompatibilities

SCIENTIFIC NOTE

Coco-glucoside's natural chain length distribution (c8-c16) provides synergistic surfactant effects where different chain lengths optimize different properties: shorter chains provide initial foam burst, longer chains provide foam stability and soil removal, creating better overall performance than any single chain length alone.
