VERNALDEHYDE
Description
Vernaldehyde, also known as 2,4-dimethyl-3-cyclohexene-1-carboxaldehyde, is a synthetic fragrance ingredient commonly used in both skincare and haircare formulations. This colorless to pale yellow liquid possesses a fresh, green, floral aroma with subtle woody undertones, reminiscent of spring foliage and lily of the valley.
In skincare and haircare products, Vernaldehyde serves primarily as a fragrance enhancer, imparting a pleasant scent to formulations. Its molecular structure allows for good stability in various product types, including creams, lotions, shampoos, and conditioners. Vernaldehyde is often used in concentrations ranging from 0.1% to 1% in finished products.
While primarily utilized for its olfactory properties, Vernaldehyde may also contribute to masking less desirable odors from other active ingredients. It is generally considered safe for use in cosmetic formulations when used at appropriate concentrations. However, as with any fragrance ingredient, it may cause sensitization in some individuals with very sensitive skin.
Formulators should be aware of regulatory guidelines regarding the use of Vernaldehyde, as some regions have specific restrictions on its concentration in leave-on and rinse-off products.
