Urea

Description

Urea is a multifaceted skincare ingredient with remarkable hydrating and exfoliating properties. This naturally occurring compound, found in the skin's natural moisturizing factor (NMF), plays a crucial role in maintaining skin health and hydration. At lower concentrations (2-5%), urea functions primarily as a humectant, drawing moisture into the skin and improving its water-binding capacity. At higher concentrations (10% and above), it exhibits keratolytic effects, gently breaking down the connections between dead skin cells to promote exfoliation.

Urea's ability to penetrate the stratum corneum enhances the skin's barrier function, reducing transepidermal water loss and improving overall skin texture. It is particularly effective in treating dry, rough, and scaly skin conditions such as xerosis, ichthyosis, and keratosis pilaris. Additionally, urea has been shown to have antimicrobial properties and can enhance the penetration of other active ingredients in skincare formulations.

The versatility of urea makes it suitable for various skin types, including sensitive skin. It is commonly incorporated into moisturizers, creams, and targeted treatments for conditions like eczema and psoriasis, offering both immediate and long-term benefits for skin hydration and texture improvement.
