TULIPALIN B

Description

Tulipalin B, also known as α-methylene-γ-butyrolactone, is a naturally occurring compound found in various plant species, particularly in the Tulipa genus. This potent allergen is a member of the sesquiterpene lactone family and is known for its strong sensitizing properties. In skincare and haircare formulations, Tulipalin B is not intentionally added due to its potential to cause allergic contact dermatitis.

The compound has a molecular weight of 98.1 g/mol and exists as a colorless liquid at room temperature. Its chemical structure features a five-membered lactone ring with an exocyclic methylene group, which contributes to its high reactivity with proteins in the skin. This reactivity is the primary mechanism behind its allergenic properties.

Despite its allergenic nature, Tulipalin B has been studied for potential antimicrobial and antifungal properties. However, its use in cosmetic products is heavily restricted or prohibited in many countries due to safety concerns. Formulators and manufacturers must be vigilant in avoiding cross-contamination from plant-derived ingredients that may contain this compound. Patch testing is crucial for individuals with suspected allergies to Tulipalin B or related compounds.
