TRISTEARIN

Description

Tristearin, also known as glyceryl tristearate, is a naturally occurring triglyceride composed of three stearic acid molecules attached to a glycerol backbone. This white, waxy solid is commonly found in animal and vegetable fats, including cocoa butter and shea butter. In skincare formulations, tristearin serves multiple purposes due to its unique chemical properties.

As an emollient, tristearin helps soften and smooth the skin by forming a protective barrier that reduces transepidermal water loss. Its high melting point (around 70°C) contributes to the stability and texture of cosmetic products, making it valuable in lipsticks, balms, and creams. Tristearin also functions as a thickening agent and helps control the viscosity of formulations.

In addition to its cosmetic benefits, tristearin has been shown to have mild anti-inflammatory properties, potentially helping to soothe irritated skin. Its low comedogenicity makes it suitable for use in products designed for acne-prone skin. Tristearin is generally considered safe for topical use and is approved by regulatory bodies worldwide for use in cosmetics and personal care products.
