TRIMYRISTIN

Description

Trimyristin is a naturally occurring triglyceride found in various plant-based oils, most notably in nutmeg butter and coconut oil. This white, crystalline solid is composed of three myristic acid molecules bound to a glycerol backbone. In skincare formulations, trimyristin serves multiple purposes, primarily as an emollient and texture enhancer.

The compound's molecular structure allows it to form a protective barrier on the skin's surface, helping to reduce transepidermal water loss and improve skin hydration. Trimyristin's melting point, close to body temperature, contributes to its smooth application and quick absorption into the skin.

As an emollient, trimyristin helps soften and smooth the skin, making it particularly beneficial in products designed for dry or mature skin types. It also acts as a mild occlusive agent, providing a light, non-greasy feel while still offering moisturizing benefits.

In cosmetic formulations, trimyristin is valued for its ability to stabilize emulsions and improve the overall texture of products. It can enhance the spreadability of creams and lotions, contributing to a luxurious sensory experience. Trimyristin is generally well-tolerated and considered safe for use in skincare products.
