TRIETHYLENE GLYCOL

Description

Triethylene glycol (TEG) is a versatile, colorless, and odorless liquid compound widely used in skincare and cosmetic formulations. With the molecular formula C6H14O4, TEG belongs to the glycol family and is known for its excellent humectant properties. This hygroscopic substance effectively attracts and retains moisture, making it valuable for hydrating and conditioning the skin.

In skincare products, TEG acts as a solvent, helping to dissolve and blend other ingredients, thus improving the overall formulation stability. Its low molecular weight allows for better penetration into the skin, enhancing the delivery of active ingredients. TEG also functions as an emollient, softening and smoothing the skin's surface.

Due to its antimicrobial properties, TEG can contribute to product preservation, though it is not typically used as a primary preservative. Its ability to increase the skin's permeability can potentially enhance the efficacy of other skincare ingredients. However, this property also necessitates careful formulation to avoid excessive penetration of unwanted substances.

While generally considered safe for topical use, some individuals may experience sensitivity. As with any skincare ingredient, patch testing is recommended before widespread application.
