TETRAMETHYLOLGLYCOLURIL

Description

Tetramethylolglycoluril, also known as TMGU, is a multifunctional ingredient used in skincare and cosmetic formulations. This synthetic compound acts as a formaldehyde-releasing preservative and antimicrobial agent, helping to extend the shelf life of products and protect against microbial contamination.

TMGU is particularly effective against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, as well as fungi. It operates by slowly releasing formaldehyde, which inhibits microbial growth. The controlled release mechanism allows for prolonged efficacy at lower concentrations compared to other preservatives.

In skincare formulations, TMGU is typically used at concentrations between 0.1% and 0.5%. Its effectiveness is pH-dependent, with optimal performance in slightly acidic to neutral environments (pH 4-7). TMGU is water-soluble and heat-stable, making it suitable for a wide range of product types, including lotions, creams, and liquid formulations.

While TMGU provides effective preservation, it's important to note that some individuals may be sensitive to formaldehyde-releasing compounds. As with any preservative, patch testing is recommended for those with sensitive skin or a history of allergic reactions to cosmetic ingredients.
