Description

Tetraacetic acid ethylenediamine (TEA-EDTA) is a chelating agent widely used in skincare and cosmetic formulations. This synthetic compound is derived from ethylenediamine and acetic acid, forming a versatile ingredient that plays a crucial role in product stability and efficacy. TEA-EDTA functions primarily by binding to metal ions, particularly calcium and magnesium, which can destabilize formulations and reduce their effectiveness.

In skincare products, TEA-EDTA helps prevent discoloration, rancidity, and degradation of active ingredients. It enhances the preservation system by inactivating metal ions that could otherwise promote microbial growth. This ingredient is particularly beneficial in water-based formulations, where it can improve the clarity and shelf life of the product.

TEA-EDTA also indirectly supports the penetration of certain active ingredients by softening water and reducing the interference of hard water minerals on the skin's surface. It's typically used in concentrations ranging from 0.05% to 0.1% in leave-on products and up to 0.6% in rinse-off formulations. While generally considered safe for cosmetic use, some individuals with sensitive skin may experience mild irritation.
