SUCROSE

Description

Sucrose, commonly known as table sugar, is a disaccharide composed of glucose and fructose molecules. In skincare formulations, sucrose serves multiple purposes beyond its well-known sweetening properties. As a natural humectant, sucrose attracts and retains moisture, helping to hydrate the skin and improve its overall texture. This property makes it valuable in moisturizers and other hydrating products.

Sucrose also functions as a gentle exfoliant, assisting in the removal of dead skin cells without causing excessive irritation. Its crystalline structure provides a physical mechanism for exfoliation when incorporated into scrubs or masks. Additionally, sucrose acts as an emollient, softening the skin and contributing to a smoother appearance.

In more advanced skincare applications, sucrose esters – derivatives of sucrose – are utilized as non-ionic surfactants and emulsifiers. These compounds help stabilize formulations and enhance the delivery of other active ingredients. Sucrose's natural origin and generally low risk of allergic reactions make it a popular choice for formulators seeking gentle, plant-based ingredients. However, its concentration and form in products should be carefully considered to optimize efficacy and minimize potential drawbacks such as stickiness or microbial growth promotion.
