Squalene

Description

Squalene is a natural, organic compound found in various plant and animal sources, most notably in shark liver oil and olive oil. This lightweight, colorless liquid is a key component of human sebum, comprising about 13% of its composition. As a hydrocarbon and precursor to cholesterol, squalene plays a crucial role in skin hydration and barrier function.

In skincare formulations, squalene is prized for its emollient properties and excellent skin compatibility. It closely mimics the skin's natural oils, allowing for rapid absorption without leaving a greasy residue. Squalene helps to lock in moisture, enhance skin elasticity, and promote a smoother, more supple complexion.

This ingredient also possesses antioxidant properties, protecting the skin from free radical damage and environmental stressors. Its ability to penetrate deeply into the skin makes it an effective carrier for other active ingredients. Squalene is particularly beneficial for dry, mature, or sensitive skin types, helping to soothe irritation and reduce the appearance of fine lines.

While historically sourced from shark liver, ethical concerns have led to the increased use of plant-derived squalene, particularly from olive oil, sugarcane, and rice bran.
