Description

Solvent Red 23, also known as Sudan III, is a synthetic azo dye widely used in the cosmetic industry, particularly in haircare formulations. This oil-soluble colorant imparts a vibrant red to orange hue to various hair products, including temporary hair colors, styling gels, and hair sprays. Its molecular structure allows for excellent solubility in oils and organic solvents, making it ideal for incorporation into anhydrous or emulsion-based formulations.

While Solvent Red 23 provides intense and long-lasting color, it is crucial to note that it is not approved for use in products that come into direct contact with mucous membranes or in leave-on skincare formulations. Its application is strictly limited to rinse-off hair products and externally applied cosmetics. Formulators must adhere to regulatory guidelines regarding its concentration, typically not exceeding 0.5% in finished products.

When used appropriately, Solvent Red 23 exhibits good stability in various pH environments and resists fading from exposure to light and heat. However, patch testing is recommended to ensure compatibility with individual users, as some may experience sensitivity to azo dyes.
