SODIUM STEARYL SULFATE

Description

Sodium Stearyl Sulfate is an anionic surfactant commonly used in personal care and cosmetic products. This white, crystalline powder is derived from stearyl alcohol, a fatty alcohol, and sulfuric acid. Its chemical structure consists of a hydrophilic sulfate head and a hydrophobic stearyl tail, allowing it to effectively reduce surface tension between water and oils.

In skincare formulations, Sodium Stearyl Sulfate primarily functions as a cleansing agent and emulsifier. It helps remove dirt, oil, and other impurities from the skin by forming micelles that encapsulate and wash away these substances. The ingredient also aids in creating stable emulsions, allowing oil and water-based components to mix effectively in products like creams and lotions.

Sodium Stearyl Sulfate is generally considered mild compared to other sulfates, making it suitable for use in products designed for sensitive skin. It has good foaming properties, contributing to the lather in cleansers and shampoos. The ingredient is biodegradable and has a low potential for bioaccumulation in the environment. While effective, it may cause mild irritation in some individuals with extremely sensitive skin, so patch testing is recommended for new users.
