Description

Sodium salicylate is a sodium salt of salicylic acid, belonging to the salicylate family of compounds. This versatile ingredient serves multiple functions in skincare formulations, primarily as an anti-inflammatory and mild exfoliant. Its molecular structure allows it to penetrate the skin effectively, making it valuable for addressing various dermatological concerns.

In skincare products, sodium salicylate acts as a keratolytic agent, helping to soften and remove the outer layer of skin. This property makes it beneficial for treating conditions such as acne, psoriasis, and seborrheic dermatitis. It also exhibits antimicrobial properties, which can help control bacterial growth on the skin's surface.

Unlike its counterpart salicylic acid, sodium salicylate has a higher pH, making it less irritating and more suitable for sensitive skin types. It can help regulate sebum production, unclog pores, and improve skin texture. Additionally, its anti-inflammatory properties can reduce redness and swelling associated with skin irritations.

Sodium salicylate is often incorporated into cleansers, toners, and treatment products at concentrations ranging from 0.5% to 2%. Its efficacy and relatively low potential for irritation make it a valuable ingredient in both over-the-counter and prescription skincare formulations.
