SODIUM PEG-4 LAURAMIDE SULFATE

Description

Sodium PEG-4 Lauramide Sulfate is a versatile surfactant commonly used in personal care and cosmetic products. This synthetic ingredient is derived from lauric acid, a saturated fatty acid found in coconut oil and palm kernel oil. It functions primarily as a cleansing agent and foam booster in various formulations.

The molecule consists of a hydrophilic (water-loving) head and a hydrophobic (water-repelling) tail, allowing it to effectively emulsify oils and suspend dirt particles for easy rinsing. The PEG-4 component refers to the addition of four ethylene oxide units, which enhances the ingredient's water solubility and mildness on the skin.

In skincare and haircare products, Sodium PEG-4 Lauramide Sulfate produces a rich, stable lather and helps to reduce surface tension, allowing for better product spreadability. It is often preferred in formulations where gentler cleansing is desired, as it tends to be less irritating than some other sulfate-based surfactants.

While effective at removing oils and impurities, this ingredient may still cause dryness in some individuals, particularly those with sensitive skin. As with any surfactant, it should be used in balanced formulations with appropriate moisturizing agents to maintain skin barrier function.
