SODIUM LACTATE

Description

Sodium lactate is a multifunctional skincare ingredient derived from the neutralization of lactic acid with sodium hydroxide. This hygroscopic compound acts as a powerful humectant, attracting and retaining moisture in the skin. Its molecular structure allows it to penetrate the stratum corneum effectively, enhancing skin hydration and improving barrier function.

In formulations, sodium lactate typically ranges from 0.5% to 5% concentration. It contributes to the natural moisturizing factor (NMF) of the skin, mimicking the body's innate hydration mechanisms. This ingredient also exhibits mild exfoliating properties, gently promoting cell turnover without causing irritation.

Sodium lactate offers pH-buffering capabilities, helping to maintain the skin's optimal acidic environment. This property aids in preserving product stability and enhancing the efficacy of other active ingredients. Additionally, it demonstrates antimicrobial activity, potentially assisting in the management of acne-prone skin.

Research suggests that sodium lactate may stimulate ceramide production, further supporting the skin's barrier function. Its versatility makes it suitable for various skincare formulations, including moisturizers, serums, and cleansers, benefiting all skin types, particularly dry and sensitive skin.
