SODIUM ISETHIONATE

Description

Sodium isethionate is a mild, synthetic surfactant widely used in personal care products and cosmetic formulations. This white, crystalline solid is derived from the reaction of sodium ethanolate and isethionic acid. Its chemical structure consists of a hydrophilic sulfonate group attached to an ethanol moiety, giving it excellent water solubility and compatibility with other ingredients.

In skincare and haircare products, sodium isethionate functions primarily as a gentle cleansing agent. It effectively removes dirt, oil, and other impurities from the skin and hair without causing excessive dryness or irritation. This makes it particularly suitable for sensitive skin formulations and baby care products. Sodium isethionate also exhibits good foaming properties, contributing to the creamy lather in cleansers and shampoos.

One of the key advantages of sodium isethionate is its mildness and low potential for skin irritation. It has a pH close to that of human skin, helping to maintain the skin's natural acid mantle. Additionally, this ingredient demonstrates good biodegradability, making it an environmentally friendly choice for formulators. Sodium isethionate is often used in combination with other surfactants to create balanced, skin-friendly cleansing systems in various personal care products.
