SODIUM ERYTHORBATE

Description

Sodium erythorbate is a potent antioxidant and reducing agent commonly used in skincare formulations. This synthetic compound is the sodium salt of erythorbic acid, a stereoisomer of ascorbic acid (vitamin C). Its molecular structure allows it to effectively neutralize free radicals and protect skin cells from oxidative stress.

In skincare products, sodium erythorbate serves multiple functions. Primarily, it acts as a preservative, extending the shelf life of formulations by preventing oxidation of other ingredients. It also helps stabilize pH levels in various skincare preparations. Additionally, its antioxidant properties contribute to skin protection against environmental aggressors such as UV radiation and pollution.

Sodium erythorbate is water-soluble and generally well-tolerated by most skin types. It can enhance the efficacy of other antioxidants in formulations, particularly vitamin C derivatives. This ingredient is often used in concentrations ranging from 0.01% to 0.1% in skincare products.

While sodium erythorbate shares some benefits with ascorbic acid, it does not possess the same collagen-boosting or skin-brightening properties. Its primary role in skincare remains as a stabilizer and antioxidant enhancer, supporting the overall efficacy and longevity of product formulations.
