Sodium Benzoate

Description

Sodium benzoate is a widely used preservative in skincare and cosmetic formulations, derived from the salt of benzoic acid. This white, crystalline powder is highly effective at inhibiting the growth of bacteria, yeasts, and molds, particularly in acidic environments with a pH below 4.5. Its antimicrobial properties make it an essential ingredient for extending the shelf life of various personal care products.

In skincare formulations, sodium benzoate typically appears in concentrations ranging from 0.1% to 0.5%. It is water-soluble and works synergistically with other preservatives like potassium sorbate to provide broad-spectrum protection against microbial contamination. This ingredient is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA and is approved for use in both leave-on and rinse-off products.

While sodium benzoate is effective and widely tolerated, some individuals may experience sensitivity or allergic reactions. It's important to note that in the presence of vitamin C (ascorbic acid), sodium benzoate can potentially form small amounts of benzene, a known carcinogen. Therefore, formulators must carefully consider product composition and pH levels when incorporating this preservative into skincare products.
