SHELLAC WAX

Description

Shellac wax, derived from the secretions of the lac bug (Kerria lacca), is a versatile ingredient in skincare formulations. This natural, biodegradable substance consists primarily of aleuritic acid, shellolic acid, and other long-chain fatty acids. Its unique chemical composition imparts film-forming, glossing, and adhesive properties, making it valuable in various cosmetic applications.

In skincare products, shellac wax functions as an emollient and occlusive agent. It forms a protective barrier on the skin's surface, helping to lock in moisture and prevent transepidermal water loss. This property is particularly beneficial in lip care formulations and products designed for dry or sensitive skin.

Shellac wax also exhibits mild antimicrobial properties, which can contribute to product preservation and skin protection. Its low melting point allows for easy incorporation into balms, salves, and solid cosmetic formulations. When used in hair care products, shellac wax can provide shine and hold without excessive build-up.

While generally considered safe for topical use, potential allergens should be noted, as some individuals may experience sensitivity to insect-derived ingredients. Shellac wax is often used in conjunction with other waxes and emollients to achieve optimal texture and performance in skincare formulations.
