SCHIZOPHYLLAN

Description

Schizophyllan is a naturally occurring polysaccharide derived from the fungus Schizophyllum commune. This complex beta-glucan has gained significant attention in the skincare industry due to its potent moisturizing, anti-aging, and immunomodulatory properties. Structurally, schizophyllan consists of a linear backbone of β-(1,3)-linked D-glucose units with β-(1,6)-linked glucose side chains, which contribute to its unique biological activities.

In skincare formulations, schizophyllan acts as a powerful humectant, attracting and retaining moisture in the skin's upper layers. This helps to improve skin hydration, elasticity, and overall texture. Studies have shown that schizophyllan can stimulate the production of hyaluronic acid in skin cells, further enhancing its moisturizing effects. Additionally, it has demonstrated antioxidant properties, protecting skin cells from oxidative stress and potentially reducing the signs of premature aging.

Schizophyllan's immunomodulatory effects may contribute to improved skin barrier function and enhanced defense against environmental stressors. Its ability to promote collagen synthesis and support wound healing makes it a valuable ingredient in anti-aging and regenerative skincare products. Typically used in concentrations ranging from 0.1% to 1%, schizophyllan is compatible with various formulation types, including serums, creams, and masks.
