salicylic acid

Description

Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) derived from willow bark, renowned for its effectiveness in treating acne and various skin conditions. This oil-soluble compound penetrates pores, exfoliating from within and dissolving excess sebum and dead skin cells. Its keratolytic properties make it particularly useful for addressing comedonal acne, blackheads, and whiteheads.

Typically used in concentrations between 0.5% to 2% in over-the-counter products, salicylic acid exhibits anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, helping to reduce redness and prevent bacterial growth associated with acne. It also promotes cell turnover, improving skin texture and tone over time.

Salicylic acid is beneficial for oily and acne-prone skin types but can be drying, so it's often combined with hydrating ingredients. It may increase sun sensitivity, necessitating the use of sunscreen. While generally well-tolerated, some individuals may experience irritation, especially at higher concentrations or with frequent use. Pregnant women and those with aspirin allergies should consult a healthcare provider before using products containing salicylic acid.
