Description

Benzoyl peroxide is a potent topical medication widely used in the treatment of acne vulgaris. This synthetic organic compound functions as a powerful antimicrobial agent, effectively targeting Propionibacterium acnes, the bacteria primarily responsible for acne formation. Benzoyl peroxide works by releasing oxygen upon contact with the skin, creating an inhospitable environment for anaerobic bacteria.

Available in various concentrations ranging from 2.5% to 10%, benzoyl peroxide is found in over-the-counter and prescription formulations. It exhibits keratolytic properties, promoting the shedding of dead skin cells and preventing pore blockages. This dual action of bactericidal and exfoliating effects makes it particularly effective in treating mild to moderate acne.

While benzoyl peroxide is generally well-tolerated, it can cause side effects such as dryness, redness, and peeling, especially at higher concentrations. It's important to note that benzoyl peroxide can bleach fabrics and hair, necessitating careful application.
