Benzephenone-3
Description
Benzophenone-3, also known as oxybenzone, is a widely used organic compound in sunscreens and other personal care products. This synthetic ingredient functions as a broad-spectrum UV filter, effectively absorbing UVB and short UVA rays. Its chemical structure allows it to absorb UV radiation and convert it into harmless heat, thus protecting the skin from sun damage.
Typically incorporated at concentrations between 1-6% in formulations, benzophenone-3 enhances the sun protection factor (SPF) of products and helps prevent premature skin aging and skin cancer. It is often combined with other UV filters for comprehensive protection. The ingredient is oil-soluble, making it suitable for various cosmetic formulations, including lotions, creams, and sprays.
However, benzophenone-3 has faced scrutiny due to potential environmental impacts and concerns about skin absorption and hormone disruption. Some studies suggest it may contribute to coral reef bleaching, leading to restrictions in certain regions. Additionally, a small percentage of individuals may experience contact dermatitis or photoallergic reactions. As a result, alternative UV filters are being explored in the skincare industry, and some manufacturers are opting for "oxybenzone-free" formulations to address these concerns.
