Description

Aluminum acetate solution, also known as Burow's solution, is a versatile topical astringent with significant applications in dermatology and wound care. This clear, colorless liquid is composed of aluminum acetate dissolved in water, typically at concentrations between 1% and 5%. Its primary mechanism of action involves protein precipitation and vasoconstriction, which contribute to its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties.

In clinical settings, aluminum acetate solution is commonly used to treat various skin conditions, including contact dermatitis, eczema, and minor burns. It effectively reduces itching, swelling, and exudation associated with these ailments. The solution is particularly valuable in managing weeping or oozing skin lesions due to its drying effect.

Aluminum acetate solution also demonstrates mild antiseptic properties, helping to prevent secondary bacterial infections in compromised skin. Its pH-lowering effect creates an environment less favorable for microbial growth. When applied as compresses or soaks, it can provide relief from insect bites, athlete's foot, and other superficial skin infections.

Despite its efficacy, prolonged use on large areas of skin should be avoided due to potential systemic absorption of aluminum. As with any topical medication, patch testing is recommended to assess individual sensitivity before widespread application.
