ACETALDEHYDE

Description

Acetaldehyde is a volatile organic compound with the molecular formula CH₃CHO. This colorless, flammable liquid is naturally present in various foods and beverages, and is also produced endogenously in the human body. In skincare formulations, acetaldehyde serves multiple purposes, primarily as a preservative and fragrance ingredient.

As a preservative, acetaldehyde inhibits microbial growth, extending the shelf life of cosmetic products. Its antimicrobial properties make it effective against a range of bacteria and fungi. In fragrance applications, acetaldehyde contributes fruity, green, and aldehydic notes to perfumes and scented skincare items.

However, acetaldehyde's use in skincare is controversial due to potential health concerns. It is classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). Prolonged exposure or high concentrations may cause skin irritation, sensitization, and other adverse effects. Regulatory bodies, including the European Union's Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS), have established maximum concentration limits for acetaldehyde in cosmetic products.

Formulators must carefully consider the risks and benefits when incorporating acetaldehyde into skincare formulations, ensuring compliance with regulatory guidelines and prioritizing consumer safety.
