ZINC PEROXIDE

Description

Zinc peroxide is a powerful oxidizing agent and antimicrobial compound used in various skincare formulations. This white, odorless powder is composed of zinc and oxygen atoms in a 1:2 ratio, with the chemical formula ZnO2. Its primary function in skincare is as an acne-fighting ingredient, offering an alternative to more commonly used benzoyl peroxide.

The efficacy of zinc peroxide stems from its ability to release oxygen upon contact with water or skin oils, creating an environment inhospitable to acne-causing bacteria. This oxygen release also aids in pore unclogging and reducing inflammation associated with acne lesions. Unlike benzoyl peroxide, zinc peroxide tends to be less irritating to the skin, making it suitable for individuals with sensitive skin types.

In addition to its acne-fighting properties, zinc peroxide exhibits wound-healing capabilities, promoting faster recovery of damaged skin. It also possesses mild skin-lightening effects, which can help fade post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation often left behind by acne. Typical concentrations in skincare products range from 1% to 6%, depending on the formulation and intended use.
