Description

Urea peroxide, also known as carbamide peroxide, is a powerful yet gentle oxidizing agent widely used in dermatology and skincare formulations. This compound is a molecular adduct of urea and hydrogen peroxide, combining the moisturizing properties of urea with the bleaching and antimicrobial effects of hydrogen peroxide. In aqueous solutions, urea peroxide breaks down into its constituent parts, releasing oxygen and providing a controlled delivery of hydrogen peroxide.

In skincare, urea peroxide is primarily utilized for its keratolytic, antimicrobial, and teeth whitening properties. It effectively softens and exfoliates the stratum corneum, facilitating the removal of dead skin cells and improving skin texture. Its oxygen-releasing action creates an unfavorable environment for anaerobic bacteria, making it useful in treating acne and other skin infections. In dental applications, urea peroxide serves as a key ingredient in teeth whitening products, safely bleaching tooth enamel.

Typically, urea peroxide is formulated at concentrations ranging from 10% to 20% in over-the-counter products, with higher concentrations reserved for professional use. It's important to note that while generally well-tolerated, some individuals may experience temporary skin irritation or sensitivity, particularly at higher concentrations or with prolonged use.
