TROLOX
Description
Trolox, also known as 6-hydroxy-2,5,7,8-tetramethylchroman-2-carboxylic acid, is a potent antioxidant and water-soluble analog of vitamin E. This synthetic compound was developed to overcome the limited solubility of natural vitamin E in aqueous solutions. Trolox exhibits exceptional free radical scavenging properties, effectively neutralizing reactive oxygen species (ROS) and preventing oxidative stress-induced cellular damage.
In skincare formulations, Trolox offers superior protection against environmental aggressors, such as UV radiation and pollution. It helps mitigate the harmful effects of oxidative stress on skin cells, potentially reducing signs of premature aging, including fine lines and wrinkles. Trolox has been shown to enhance the stability of other antioxidants in cosmetic formulations, particularly when combined with vitamin C.
Research indicates that Trolox may have anti-inflammatory properties, making it beneficial for sensitive or irritated skin. Its ability to penetrate the skin barrier allows for effective delivery of its antioxidant benefits to deeper layers of the epidermis. When incorporated into topical products, Trolox can contribute to overall skin health, promoting a more even skin tone and improving the appearance of photodamaged skin.
