Description

Trilinolenin is a triglyceride composed of glycerol esterified with three α-linolenic acid molecules. This compound is a significant component of many plant-based oils, particularly those rich in omega-3 fatty acids. It is most abundant in flaxseed oil, chia seed oil, and perilla oil.

In skincare formulations, trilinolenin serves as an emollient and occlusive agent, helping to maintain skin hydration by reducing transepidermal water loss. Its high content of essential fatty acids contributes to the maintenance and repair of the skin barrier function. Trilinolenin also exhibits anti-inflammatory properties, potentially beneficial for conditions like eczema and psoriasis.

When applied topically, trilinolenin is readily absorbed by the skin, where it can be metabolized to release α-linolenic acid. This process supports the synthesis of ceramides and other lipids crucial for skin health.
