T-BUTYL P-CRESOL

Description

T-Butyl p-Cresol, also known as Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT), is a potent antioxidant widely used in skincare and cosmetic formulations. This synthetic compound effectively neutralizes free radicals, protecting products from oxidation and extending their shelf life. In skincare, T-Butyl p-Cresol helps preserve the efficacy of active ingredients, particularly those prone to degradation when exposed to air or light.

Typically used in concentrations ranging from 0.01% to 0.1%, T-Butyl p-Cresol demonstrates excellent stability across a wide pH range. Its oil-soluble nature makes it particularly suitable for emulsion-based formulations and anhydrous products. While primarily utilized as a preservative, some studies suggest potential anti-inflammatory properties, which may contribute to skin soothing effects.

Despite its benefits, T-Butyl p-Cresol has faced scrutiny due to concerns about potential endocrine disruption and skin sensitization in high concentrations. However, when used within recommended limits, it is generally considered safe by regulatory bodies. Formulators often pair it with other antioxidants like Vitamin E to enhance overall product stability and performance.
