Common Name(s): Streptococcus zooepidemicus extract, streptococcus zooepidemicus extract, hyaluronic acid producer, industrial ha fermentation
CAS Number: N/a
DESCRIPTION
What It Does: Delivers free hyaluronic acid from bacterial capsule polysaccharide synthesis alongside ha biosynthetic pathway metabolites (udp-glucuronic acid, udp-glcnac) for skin conditioning and enhanced ha synthesis support.
Why It's Used: S. zooepidemicus was the original industrial ha producer before recombinant bacillus and engineered yeast methods — the ferment extract provides both the ha product and the fermentation metabolites from the organism's ha capsule biosynthesis.
How It Works: S. zooepidemicus produces ha via hyaluronate synthase (has) from udp-glcnac and udp-glcua substrates — the same enzyme and substrate as mammalian ha synthesis. the extracted ha is structurally identical to mammalian ha providing identical receptor binding (cd44) and water retention (1,000× weight).
Typically Found In: Ha-based hydration, microbiome support

Comedogenicity Rating: 0/5 – non-comedogenic
Sensitivity Concerns: Well-tolerated by most skin types.
Safe for Sensitive Skin: Yes
SAFETY & COMPATIBILITY
Safety Profile: Good safety profile at recommended concentrations. ewg score: 1–2.
Works Well With: Standard skincare actives
Avoid Combining With: No known significant incompatibilities
SCIENTIFIC NOTE
Modern industrial ha production has largely shifted to recombinant bacillus subtilis for improved safety profile — s. zooepidemicus-produced ha requires verification of group c streptococcus virulence factor removal (streptolysin, hyaluronidase) in the manufacturing process.
