STANNOUS CHLORIDE

Description

Stannous chloride, also known as tin(II) chloride, is a versatile inorganic compound with the chemical formula SnCl2. In skincare formulations, it serves multiple functions, primarily as an antioxidant and reducing agent. This ingredient is particularly effective in stabilizing color and preventing oxidation in various cosmetic products.

When incorporated into skincare formulations, stannous chloride can help maintain product integrity by inhibiting the oxidation of other ingredients, thus extending shelf life. It also plays a role in preserving the efficacy of active ingredients that are susceptible to oxidative degradation.

In personal care products, stannous chloride is often used in small concentrations, typically ranging from 0.01% to 0.1%. At these levels, it is generally well-tolerated by most skin types. However, as with any ingredient, patch testing is recommended for individuals with sensitive skin or known allergies.

It's important to note that stannous chloride can interact with certain packaging materials, particularly those containing aluminum. Therefore, formulators must consider appropriate packaging options when using this ingredient to ensure product stability and efficacy throughout its intended shelf life.
