Common Name(s): Sodium algin sulfate,sodium alginate sulfate,sulfated polysaccharide,heparin-mimetic anti-inflammatory

CAS Number: N/a

DESCRIPTION

What It Does: Binds basic growth factors (fgf, vegf) through heparin-like sulfate group electrostatic interactions modulating wound healing signalling, provides anti-inflammatory activity from nfkb pathway inhibition, and conditions skin from the anionic polysaccharide film.

Why It's Used: Sulfated polysaccharides mimic heparan sulfate proteoglycans (hspgs) in the extracellular matrix — the most physiologically important glycosaminoglycan in wound healing and tissue repair signalling.

How It Works: Alginate sulfate (ds >1.0 per disaccharide) provides polyanionic density similar to heparin (ds 2-3 per disaccharide). the sulfate groups electrostatically bind basic growth factors (fgf-1/2, vegf, hgf) at positively charged heparin-binding domains — anchoring growth factors to the extracellular matrix providing sustained-release delivery to fibroblast and keratinocyte receptors.

SKIN COMPATIBILITY

Irritancy Rating: 1/5 – very low

Comedogenicity Rating: 0/5 – non-comedogenic

Sensitivity Concerns: Well-tolerated by most skin types.

Safe for Sensitive Skin: Yes

SAFETY & COMPATIBILITY

Safety Profile: Good safety profile at recommended concentrations. ewg score: 1–2.

Works Well With: Standard skincare actives

Avoid Combining With: No known significant incompatibilities

SCIENTIFIC NOTE

Alginate-based sulfated polysaccharides have superior biocompatibility versus synthetic heparin analogues from the natural seaweed polysaccharide backbone — food-grade alginate safety profile extends to the sulfated derivative at cosmetic concentrations.
