PROPYL ALCOHOL

Description

Propyl alcohol, also known as 1-propanol or n-propanol, is a versatile organic compound widely used in skincare and cosmetic formulations. This clear, colorless liquid with a mild alcoholic odor belongs to the family of primary alcohols and has the chemical formula C3H8O. In skincare applications, propyl alcohol primarily functions as a solvent, preservative, and viscosity regulator.

As a solvent, propyl alcohol effectively dissolves both oil-soluble and water-soluble ingredients, facilitating their incorporation into various product formulations. Its preservative properties help inhibit microbial growth, extending the shelf life of skincare products. The ingredient's ability to regulate viscosity aids in creating desired textures and consistencies in creams, lotions, and gels.

Propyl alcohol demonstrates good skin penetration, which can enhance the delivery of active ingredients. However, it may cause dryness or irritation in some individuals, particularly those with sensitive skin. When used in appropriate concentrations, typically below 5%, propyl alcohol is generally considered safe for topical use. Its low molecular weight allows for quick evaporation, making it suitable for products requiring rapid drying, such as hand sanitizers and toners.
