POTASSIUM SORBATE

Description

Potassium sorbate is a widely used preservative in skincare and cosmetic formulations, derived from sorbic acid, a naturally occurring compound found in some berries. This white, crystalline powder is highly effective in inhibiting the growth of molds, yeasts, and fungi, thereby extending the shelf life of products and ensuring their safety for consumer use.

In skincare formulations, potassium sorbate typically functions at concentrations between 0.1% and 0.5%. It is particularly valuable in water-based products, where microbial growth is more likely to occur. The ingredient is active in a pH range of 3 to 6.5, making it suitable for a variety of skincare applications.

Potassium sorbate is considered a gentle preservative, with a low risk of skin irritation or sensitization. It is often preferred in natural and organic formulations due to its relatively benign profile compared to some synthetic alternatives. The ingredient is water-soluble and easily incorporated into various product types, including creams, lotions, serums, and toners.

While primarily used as a preservative, potassium sorbate also exhibits mild antioxidant properties, potentially offering additional benefits in protecting formulations from oxidative degradation. Its efficacy, versatility, and safety profile make it a staple ingredient in modern skincare formulations.
