POTASSIUM METHYLPARABEN

Description

Potassium methylparaben is a widely used preservative in skincare and cosmetic formulations. This synthetic compound is derived from para-hydroxybenzoic acid and belongs to the paraben family of preservatives. Its primary function is to inhibit the growth of microorganisms, including bacteria and fungi, thereby extending the shelf life of products and ensuring their safety for consumer use.

With a molecular formula of C8H7KO3, potassium methylparaben is highly soluble in water and demonstrates excellent stability across a broad pH range. It is particularly effective in acidic environments, making it suitable for a variety of skincare formulations. The ingredient exhibits antimicrobial activity against a wide spectrum of microorganisms, including gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, as well as yeasts and molds.

Typically used in concentrations ranging from 0.1% to 0.4%, potassium methylparaben is often combined with other preservatives for enhanced efficacy. While it has been deemed safe for use in cosmetics by regulatory bodies, some concerns have been raised regarding potential endocrine disruption. As a result, ongoing research continues to evaluate its long-term effects and safety profile in various applications.
