Common Name(s): Amino acid or organic acid salt surfactant, mild anionic surfactant, gentle cleansing
CAS Number: N/a
DESCRIPTION
What It Does: Provides gentle, effective cleansing with minimal skin irritation โ suitable for sensitive skin, baby care, and facial cleansers requiring mild surfactant systems.
Why It's Used: Amino acid and organic acid surfactants provide the gentlest anionic cleansing โ glutamate, taurate, and sarcosinate head groups have inherently lower skin protein denaturing activity than sulfate head groups from the amino acid's protein-complementarity chemistry.
How It Works: The amino acid-derived head group (glutamate, glycinate, taurate, sarcosinate) provides anionic character at cleansing ph while the amino acid backbone has structural complementarity with skin proteins โ reducing the electrostatic protein-surfactant binding energy that causes irritation compared to simple sulfate anionics.
Typically Found In: Gentle cleansers, baby care, facial wash

SCIENTIFIC NOTE
Amino acid surfactant mildness ranking: cocoyl glutamate โ cocoyl glycinate > cocoyl sarcosinate > lauryl glucoside > sles > sls โ the amino acid head group provides consistently lower zein protein solubilisation (irritation predictor) than equivalent-chain-length sulfates.
