POTASSIUM BROMATE

Description

Potassium bromate is a controversial ingredient that has been used in cosmetic and personal care products, primarily as an oxidizing agent. This white crystalline compound is composed of potassium and bromate ions and has the chemical formula KBrO3. Historically, it was employed in hair care formulations, particularly in permanent wave solutions and hair dyes, due to its ability to promote chemical reactions that alter hair structure.

Despite its efficacy in certain applications, potassium bromate has faced significant scrutiny and regulation due to safety concerns. It is classified as a category 2B carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), indicating it is possibly carcinogenic to humans. As a result, its use in cosmetics has been restricted or banned in many countries, including the European Union and Canada.

In the United States, the FDA has not approved potassium bromate for use in cosmetic products. However, it may still be found in some imported goods. When present in formulations, it typically functions as an oxidizing agent, pH adjuster, or buffering agent. Given its potential health risks and regulatory status, many formulators have shifted to safer alternatives for achieving similar functions in skincare and hair care products.
