PONCEAU SX

Description

Ponceau SX, also known as Acid Red 112 or C.I. 27195, is a synthetic red azo dye primarily used in cosmetic and personal care products. This water-soluble colorant is derived from coal tar and has a distinct bright red hue. While it is approved for use in certain countries, including the United States, its application in cosmetics is limited due to potential sensitization concerns.

In haircare formulations, Ponceau SX can be found in temporary hair dyes and color-depositing products, providing a vibrant red tint to the hair shaft. Its molecular structure allows for effective color deposition without penetrating deeply into the hair cuticle, making it suitable for short-term color effects.

However, it is important to note that Ponceau SX has been associated with allergic reactions in some individuals, particularly those with sensitive skin or a history of contact dermatitis. As a result, its use in skincare products is generally avoided. Formulators and manufacturers must adhere to strict regulations regarding its concentration and application in cosmetic products to ensure consumer safety.
