POLYVINYL CHLORIDE

Description

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is a synthetic plastic polymer widely used in various industries, including cosmetics and skincare. In skincare formulations, PVC serves primarily as a film-forming agent and viscosity modifier. Its ability to create a protective barrier on the skin's surface makes it valuable in products designed for skin protection and moisture retention.

PVC's chemical structure allows it to form flexible, transparent films when applied to the skin. This property is particularly useful in sunscreens, where it helps create an even, water-resistant layer. In makeup products, PVC contributes to improved wear time and smudge resistance.

The polymer's stability and inertness make it compatible with a wide range of cosmetic ingredients. It is resistant to oils, acids, and many solvents, ensuring product integrity over time. PVC also exhibits low toxicity and minimal skin irritation potential when used in cosmetic concentrations.

However, concerns about environmental impact and potential contamination with plasticizers have led to increased scrutiny of PVC in personal care products. As a result, many formulators are exploring alternative ingredients that offer similar benefits with improved sustainability profiles.
