Polysorbates

Description

Polysorbates are a class of emulsifiers and solubilizers widely used in skincare, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical formulations. These nonionic surfactants are derived from sorbitol and various fatty acids, with the most common types being Polysorbate 20, 40, 60, and 80. Their primary function is to stabilize oil-in-water emulsions and enhance the solubility of oils and fragrances in water-based products.

In skincare, polysorbates play a crucial role in creating smooth, homogeneous formulations by preventing the separation of oil and water phases. They also aid in the even distribution of active ingredients throughout the product, ensuring consistent efficacy. Polysorbates are particularly valuable in cleansing formulations, where they help to emulsify and remove oils and makeup from the skin.

These ingredients are generally well-tolerated by most skin types and are considered safe for use in cosmetics. However, some individuals with sensitive skin may experience mild irritation. Polysorbates are biodegradable and have low toxicity profiles, making them environmentally friendly options for formulators. Their versatility and effectiveness in various pH ranges contribute to their widespread use across diverse skincare categories, from moisturizers and serums to sunscreens and cleansers.
