POLYPROPYLENE

Description

Polypropylene is a versatile synthetic polymer widely used in skincare and cosmetic products. This thermoplastic material is derived from propylene monomers and is known for its excellent chemical resistance, durability, and low moisture absorption properties. In skincare formulations, polypropylene often appears in the form of microbeads or microspheres, serving as an exfoliating agent in scrubs and cleansers.

The ingredient's smooth texture and spherical shape make it an effective yet gentle mechanical exfoliant, helping to remove dead skin cells and improve skin texture without causing excessive irritation. Polypropylene's inert nature ensures it doesn't react with other ingredients in the formulation, maintaining product stability. Its low density allows for easy suspension in various product bases, from gels to creams.

However, the use of polypropylene microbeads in cosmetics has faced scrutiny due to environmental concerns, as they can contribute to microplastic pollution in waterways. As a result, many manufacturers are shifting towards biodegradable alternatives. When used in packaging, polypropylene's barrier properties help protect skincare products from moisture and contamination, extending shelf life and maintaining product efficacy.
