Polyisobutene

Description

Polyisobutene is a versatile synthetic polymer widely used in skincare and cosmetic formulations. This colorless, odorless, and non-toxic compound is derived from isobutylene, a petroleum-based monomer. Its molecular structure consists of repeating isobutylene units, which can be tailored to different molecular weights to achieve specific properties.

In skincare applications, polyisobutene functions primarily as an emollient and texture enhancer. It forms a protective barrier on the skin's surface, helping to reduce transepidermal water loss and maintain hydration. The ingredient's light, silky texture contributes to improved product spreadability and a smooth, non-greasy feel upon application.

Polyisobutene also acts as a film-forming agent, providing a cohesive layer that can help other active ingredients adhere to the skin. This property makes it particularly useful in long-wearing makeup formulations and sunscreens. Additionally, its ability to dissolve and disperse other ingredients enhances product stability and extends shelf life.

While generally well-tolerated, individuals with sensitive skin should perform patch tests before widespread use. Polyisobutene is not known to clog pores or cause acne, making it suitable for various skin types.
