Description

Polyethylene is a synthetic polymer widely used in skincare and cosmetic formulations. This versatile ingredient serves multiple functions, primarily as a thickening agent, binder, and emollient. Its molecular structure consists of long chains of ethylene monomers, resulting in a stable and inert compound.

In skincare products, polyethylene is often found in the form of microscopic beads or spheres. These particles contribute to the texture and feel of creams, lotions, and exfoliants. The ingredient helps to improve product consistency, enhancing spreadability and creating a smooth, silky sensation on the skin.

Polyethylene's oil-absorbing properties make it beneficial in mattifying products and oil-control formulations. It can also act as a film-former, providing a protective barrier on the skin's surface. This characteristic aids in moisture retention and can contribute to the water-resistance of sunscreens and other protective skincare products.

While generally considered safe for topical use, concerns have been raised about the environmental impact of microplastic beads derived from polyethylene. As a result, many manufacturers are transitioning to biodegradable alternatives in exfoliating products.
