Poloxamers
Description
Poloxamers are a class of nonionic triblock copolymers composed of a central hydrophobic block of polypropylene oxide flanked by two hydrophilic blocks of polyethylene oxide. These versatile compounds are widely used in pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and industrial applications due to their unique properties. In skincare formulations, poloxamers function as emulsifiers, solubilizers, and stabilizers, enhancing the texture and performance of various products.
The amphiphilic nature of poloxamers allows them to form micelles in aqueous solutions, making them excellent carriers for hydrophobic active ingredients. This characteristic improves the bioavailability and efficacy of certain skincare compounds. Poloxamers also exhibit thermo-responsive behavior, transitioning from liquid to gel form at specific temperatures, which can be advantageous in developing controlled-release formulations.
Different types of poloxamers, such as Poloxamer 188 and Poloxamer 407, are utilized based on their specific molecular weights and hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) values. These variations allow formulators to fine-tune product characteristics like viscosity, spreadability, and moisture retention. Poloxamers are generally considered safe for topical use and are compatible with a wide range of skincare ingredients, making them valuable components in modern cosmetic formulations.
