POLOXAMER 407

Description

Poloxamer 407, also known as Pluronic F-127, is a versatile synthetic copolymer widely used in skincare and pharmaceutical formulations. This non-ionic surfactant consists of polyethylene oxide (PEO) and polypropylene oxide (PPO) blocks, arranged in a triblock structure (PEO-PPO-PEO). Its unique composition grants it exceptional solubilizing and emulsifying properties, making it valuable in various topical applications.

In skincare, Poloxamer 407 functions as a thickening agent, emulsifier, and stabilizer. It enhances the texture and consistency of products while improving the dispersion of active ingredients. This polymer exhibits thermoreversible gelation, transitioning from a liquid to a gel state as temperature increases, which can be advantageous in certain formulations.

Poloxamer 407 is particularly useful in creating clear gel formulations and stabilizing oil-in-water emulsions. It aids in solubilizing hydrophobic substances, enhancing their bioavailability and efficacy. Additionally, this ingredient demonstrates good compatibility with various active compounds and helps improve product spreadability on the skin.

While generally considered safe for topical use, formulators should be mindful of potential sensitization in some individuals.
