Poloxamer 407
Description
Poloxamer 407 is a versatile synthetic copolymer widely used in pharmaceutical and cosmetic formulations. This non-ionic surfactant consists of polyethylene oxide (PEO) and polypropylene oxide (PPO) blocks arranged in a triblock structure (PEO-PPO-PEO). Its unique composition enables Poloxamer 407 to exhibit temperature-dependent sol-gel transition properties, making it valuable for various applications in skincare and drug delivery systems.
In dermatological preparations, Poloxamer 407 functions as an emulsifier, solubilizer, and thickening agent. It enhances the stability of formulations and improves the dispersion of active ingredients. The thermoreversible gelation of Poloxamer 407 allows for the development of novel topical delivery systems that can transition from a liquid to a gel upon application to the skin, promoting better adherence and controlled release of active compounds.
Poloxamer 407 demonstrates excellent biocompatibility and low toxicity, making it suitable for sensitive skin formulations. It also possesses moisturizing properties and can form a protective film on the skin surface, aiding in hydration retention. In higher concentrations, it can act as a penetration enhancer, potentially improving the absorption of other ingredients through the stratum corneum.
