POLOXAMER 217
Description
Poloxamer 217 is a versatile synthetic copolymer widely used in skincare and personal care formulations. This non-ionic surfactant belongs to the family of poloxamers, also known as Pluronics. Its structure consists of a central hydrophobic block of polypropylene oxide flanked by two hydrophilic blocks of polyethylene oxide.
In skincare applications, Poloxamer 217 functions as an emulsifier, solubilizer, and stabilizer. It helps create stable emulsions by reducing interfacial tension between oil and water phases, allowing for improved ingredient dispersion and enhanced product texture. This polymer also exhibits thermo-reversible gelation properties, which can be beneficial in certain formulations.
Poloxamer 217 is particularly useful in cleansing products, where it aids in the removal of oils and impurities from the skin without causing excessive dryness. Its mild nature makes it suitable for sensitive skin formulations. Additionally, this ingredient can act as a penetration enhancer, potentially improving the delivery of active ingredients into the skin.
When formulating with Poloxamer 217, it's important to consider its concentration, as excessive use may lead to tackiness or residue on the skin.
