PIGMENT RED 5
Description
Pigment Red 5, also known as CI 12490 or D&C Red No. 5, is a synthetic organic colorant widely used in cosmetic and personal care products. This vibrant red pigment belongs to the azo dye family and is particularly valued for its excellent color stability and resistance to light and heat. In skincare and haircare formulations, Pigment Red 5 serves as a reliable coloring agent, imparting a rich, warm red hue to various products.
The pigment's particle size typically ranges from 0.1 to 0.5 micrometers, allowing for smooth dispersion in formulations. It exhibits good compatibility with most cosmetic ingredients and maintains its color intensity across a wide pH range. Pigment Red 5 is insoluble in water and most organic solvents, which contributes to its long-lasting performance in leave-on and rinse-off products.
While primarily used in decorative cosmetics like lipsticks and nail polishes, Pigment Red 5 also finds applications in tinted skincare products and temporary hair colorants. Its low skin penetration and negligible dermal absorption make it generally safe for topical use. However, as with all colorants, patch testing is recommended to ensure individual tolerance.
